Room Measurement with 2DScanner in Minutes
Room measurement no longer has to depend on tape measures, sketches, notepads, and repeated checks. With 2DScanner, you can capture accurate room measurements automatically and create a clean floor plan in just a few minutes.
The device works as a practical 2D laser room scanner. It helps professionals measure walls, corners, openings, and room geometry with less manual effort.
After scanning, the result can be exported as a DXF floor plan for use in CAD software. As a result, you can move from site measurement to digital drawing much faster.
This guide explains the complete room measurement workflow. You will learn how to connect the device, level it, start a Combo Scan, add notes and photos, use stickers, and export the final file.
1. Open the App and Connect
First, open the 2DScanner app. Then, switch on the 2DScanner device and mount it on the tripod.
Next, tap Connect. As soon as the device pairs with the app, all functions become active and you are ready to start measuring the room.
If this is your first connection, the app may ask for permissions. Grant the necessary permissions so the app can communicate with the device correctly.
Once connected, you can continue with leveling and scanning.
2. Level the Instrument with Spirit Level
Before scanning, tap the Spirit Level button. This helps you check the position of the instrument before starting the room measurement.
For easier setup, place the tripod at roughly two metres if you are using the 2DScanner tripod. Then, rotate the device so the laser beam lines up with one of the tripod levers.
While the motor is still off, you can turn the scanner by hand. This makes the bubble move parallel to the tripod levers instead of diagonally.
As a result, leveling becomes easier and more controlled.
Use small, careful movements to bring the bubble as close to the centre as possible.
Good to know: 2DScanner does not need to be perfectly level. The device knows its own tilt and corrects the measurement mathematically.
However, reasonable leveling is still recommended. This is especially useful when you scan more rooms and use stickers to join several scans together.
In addition, walls can give slightly different results if they are measured at a different height each time. Therefore, a stable and consistent setup helps improve the final floor plan.
Tip: if you need to measure higher, you can safely raise the tripod centre column. The leveling will not be lost.
3. Start Room Measurement with Combo Scan
Now tap Combo Scan. This is the main room measurement workflow inside the 2DScanner app.
After entering Combo Scan, the device zeroes itself for a few seconds. When it is ready, tap Auto to begin the laser scan.
If you scan with step 1, the scanner can capture about 2,000 measured points in around 4 minutes. This gives a detailed scan with points close together.
For a normal room, step 4 is often a good starting point. It gives a practical balance between scan detail and speed.
On the next screen, use the step buttons ±10, ±4, and ±1 to adjust the scanning step.
A larger step is faster because the measured points are farther apart. A smaller step gives finer detail because the scanner records more points.
4. Watch the Floor Plan Build Itself
As the scan runs, the measured points start streaming to your phone. They appear on the screen in real time.
Alongside the scanned points, you will also see red lines generated by the 2DScanner app. These are statistical best-fit lines.
The app calculates these lines with the least-squares method. In simple terms, it finds the average straight line that best represents each wall.
This is especially useful at corners. The scanner can take points before and after a corner, fit the wall lines, and then extend them until they intersect.
Therefore, even if the laser does not hit the exact physical corner, the app can reconstruct the corner mathematically from the surrounding wall points.
The result is not a messy point cloud. Instead, you get clean, mathematically defined walls that are much more useful for a CAD-ready floor plan.
You can stop the scan at any time with Back. Then, you can resume scanning with Auto.
You can also rescan any area when needed. The Go button helps with this process. Tap anywhere on the plan with your finger, then tap Go. The 2DScanner rotates and points exactly at that position.
5. Helpful Tools During Room Measurement
While the room measurement scan is running, several tools are available. These tools help you add useful information directly to the floor plan.
Notes and Photos
You can place notes anywhere on the plan. You can also attach photos to these notes.
To add a note, tap the desired position on the drawing. Then, press the Note button.
On the next screen, you can type your note or take a photo. When you add the note, it is saved to the plan and the text appears on the drawing.
If a photo is attached, a photo icon also appears. You can long-press the icon at any time to view the picture.
Height Measurements
If you have the ERA1D, the laser distance meter from 2DScanner, you can measure window heights and other vertical details while the room scan is still running.
This is helpful for more complete as-built documentation. It allows you to collect both floor plan data and important height information during the same visit.
6. Helpful Tools After Scanning
Once the scan is finished, inspect the room on screen. You can add more detail, rescan areas, or clean up the floor plan.
Notes Anchored to a Scanned Point
Besides free-floating notes, you can attach a note to a point measured by the laser itself.
Press the Reference Point button, the one with the two blue dots. A new point is scanned, and you can attach a note or photo to it.
This point does not affect the scanned geometry. Many users rely on it to mark doors, windows, and other important details precisely on the plan.
Rotate the Plan
From the menu, open Tools. You can rotate the drawing on your phone screen in the direction you prefer.
You can also use this area for cleanup tasks, such as deleting points or removing notes.
Use Stickers for Multiple Scans
If you need to move the 2DScanner to a new position, use stickers. This is useful when you continue in the next room or scan an area the laser could not reach from the first position.
Place a few stickers somewhere visible from the next scanning station. They are added in the same way as reference points.
Press the button with the two blue dots. Then, choose Sticker and place a physical mark exactly where the laser hits.
These stickers allow the app to align multiple scans into one accurate floor plan. Therefore, they are important when scanning a complete property room by room.
Improve Sharp Angle Measurements
If the laser hits a door jamb at a very steep angle, point quality can drop. In that case, you can help the scanner by creating a cleaner target surface.
For example, hold a small board, or even your hand, at the spot. This gives the laser a better surface to measure.
7. Save and Export the Room Measurement Floor Plan
When the room is complete, save your scan. If you continue with another scan in the same drawing, the file is saved automatically.
After saving, the app asks whether you want to send the file right away. This allows you to share the room measurements quickly.
In just a few seconds, your scan can be on a colleague’s desk or inside your CAD software as a DXF floor plan.
